I have a few crazy bus memories but here are my top 3; The big side bus window getting bricked multiple times by a gang of kids in Edinburgh, and being quite freaked out by that. The final bus story is the grossest, I was around 14 and got the bus to my friend’s house in a nearby town, had my headphones on and there weren’t loads of people on the bus – I was on the top deck. I smelled something weird and turned & saw the two guys on the back seat were smoking heroin. I opened the windows, I can’t believe in retrospect I didn’t get up and go downstairs but I guess I was afraid. Buses are true snapshots of society.

Each would try to increase their customer base by getting you to buy a weekly ticket. Bus Y pulled up. A bunch of male students got on and one showed them an X pass. The driver said he didn’t accept X passes just Y. One of them said “O just fuck off then!” to the driver, then they made to get off. The driver got out of his booth, off the bus, then proceeded to lamp the lad in the face, hitting him till he fell on the ground. We all stood there in stunned silence. The driver then got back on the bus and drove away. I (M 19 at the time) lived in Amsterdam in the early 1990s and lived about 5 stops outside the city on the underground metro. I had gone to meet some friends in the city and we’d said goodbye and I was hoping to catch the last train home. I thought there was a chance I’d missed it but as I was passing a city centre underground station, I decided to go in to check if it had gone yet, as the station was still open. In this station there were two entrances with two staircases facing each other, both leading down to the same single platform. My luck was in, or so I thought, as there on the platform, heading in the direction I was going was what I assumed to be, the last train, lights on, engine running ( or electrics or whatever it ran on) but doors closed. Lights on the platform still on.
