It is, and I see this in all of the The Art Of Awesome Dancing Vintage Susnet Lindy Hop T-Shirt it is in the first place but top comments here, but none of them are answering why. It’s often one of two things. 1. It’s a power/control thing that bad parents see as being necessary to get the kids to ask “how high” when told to jump. 2. It’s a generational holdover from a point in history where your ancestors lived in poverty. One common source of this today in the US is the Great Depression. Back then, if you were parents barely scraping by to keep your family alive, you quite literally could not afford for ANY food to go to waste, and this was at a point where if you were that poor, you almost certainly didn’t have a way to save leftovers like a refrigerator. Meals were irregular, getting enough food to feed the family was a blessing. So if your kid sat at the table, ate two thirds of what you gave them, and then stopped, it wasn’t an option. You had to force that kid to take in as many nutrients as possible at that sitting because it was often unpredictable when you would be able to present them with another full plate, and not maximizing that intake whenever you could had the potential to lead to malnutrition. The kids often didn’t understand that at a young age, they just learned that “Even if I’m full, I have to clean my plate. Those are the rules.” So they then grow up, and even if they get to a point where they’re financially stable, when they have kids, they pass on that requirement. Not because they think their kids will starve, but because those are the rules.

It’s in the The Art Of Awesome Dancing Vintage Susnet Lindy Hop T-Shirt it is in the first place but same vein about how a lot of parenting things that reinforce toxic masculinity are borderline abusive, but used to be seen as “necessary” because it’s a tough world out there and you needed your kid to be able to fend for themselves. Or beating your kids in general. Today, disobedience will land you in trouble, but 400 years ago (or even like 100 years ago depending on where you are) disobedience as a child could quite literally get you killed. You’d rather have a kid that’s traumatized and prepared than a dead child. Still doesn’t fully justify the abuse in my opinion, but the stakes were higher and the desperation was more understandable. I’m with you. My parents forced me to finish my plate and because of that I have a scarcity mindset. I noticed it when i would Get a big soda and feel like I have to finish it and then remember “no I fucken don’t. This is poison water. I should throw it away after one sip if I want to”. Same with food. If I payd and I’m full then it doesn’t matter if half the plate is left. I got what I paid for, a full meal I’ve never done that to my kids. I’m pretty good at assessing how much they can eat so I give them appropriate sized portions. If they don’t finish their food that’s fine. Food should never be a source of anxiety or a reason for conflict. Meals should be enjoyable, everyone should leave the table happy and content.
