Went to a pub/restaurant after, which the guests paid between them (it wasn’t expensive, we barely drank). An expensive wedding is a waste of money IMO. It’s just a day and in itself defines nothing. It’s the act of committing to the person you love that counts for me, and that needn’t even involve a wedding. But everyone has different priorities. Was going to have a 100 people wedding until I saw the prices. So now it’s gonna cost Under 400, we just going to get the certificates and have an incredible honeymoon and paid off the mortgage instead. Decided to have a happier life rather than one happy day £100, registry office affair. To each their own, but we choose the minimum for symbolic gestures and put the money into a house instead.

Eloping to Vegas in 2 weeks, came in at £4.5k including outfits and rings etc PLUS we’re getting a fun holiday out of it. We aren’t having any guests. Definitely validated my decision. Even that was more than I wanted. I wanted to get married with two witnesses then have a nice meal with family after. We had 2 guests and the whole thing cost £500.00, we were both working on the buses so turned up in our uniforms! I paid for the cake which was £5.00 and I paid for my wedding ring which was £10.00! 15-20k, enjoyed the day but ridiculous amount to be honest. Our wedding was pretty basic/low key but it adds up very quickly. £1500 in 1997. 40 guests, church, reception, the whole works. Parents gave £1000. So only cost us £500. Been married 26 years this year. Under £1k, that was including flying over to Miami, getting a marriage license and paying for the ceremony, outfits and rings. Very low key, just us and his close family. We are having a UK party in September which will probs be under £500 total. Even if I assume that “close family” means just 2 people, getting 4 return flights to Florida for under a grand is impressive.
