Omgggg I FINALLY found this answer. As a former dispatcher I scrolled and scrolled and scrolled and both could and couldn’t believe no one had mentioned this job. When I dispatched in a major city I dispatched shootings, stabbings, many many many car pileups on commuter highways where no one knew where they were, domestics, overdoses, you name it. I made $18 an hour on 10 hour overnight shifts with unlimited mandatory overtime shifts, so there was hardly a week we got out without being required to work 48 hours. I switched to a consolidated regional center and almost doubled my pay but had to monitor a police or fire dispatch channel while answering and handling 911 and admin calls for 18 cities. Social workers. They provide such a wide range of absolutely necessary public services which require people who are particularly empathetic and sensitive to others’ needs. Most “decent” paying jobs require an MSW or even a DSW and even then the pay is trash (even in the private sector) considering the amount of debt most of them go in to. I have one friend in particular with an MSW who makes just above 65k in the transplant coordination unit of a large private health system, and I think it’s just horrendous. She’s in debt up to her eyeballs and comes home heartbroken every day from signing up 20YO kids to be organ donors because they’re already dying. Before this, she worked for a different system in palliative care for around 50k. Constant sad deaths. Like teachers, social workers do their work because they love it and want to help people, but I wish they would get thrown a friggin bone once in a while.
