Now. We live in a modern society. We do not need fantastical figure to tell us what to do anymore. We have things like nationalism and patriotism and capitalism to worship now. Being raised in any practice that tells you to disbelieve objective truth in favor of doing what you’re told by a power you were told holds authority over you makes it easier for people in those positions of authority to lead you down bad paths. In America right now around 30% of the populace has placed a serial liar in that position of authority because he said the right words to them, so they have placed themselves in his basket because that is how they were raised, to always listen to authority even when it is known to be factually untrue. It may not always be abusive, but it primes people to be irrational and reactionary, which as we have seen in the past 7-8 years can be incredibly harmful.

man I am incredibly disappointed in this sub. Yall dont seem to realize that you are falling into the Ted lasso an American college football coach NCAA championship shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this exact same world view that western theists held that you criticize. all the anti religion arguments here are built on the exact same grounds that was used to justify the genocide the indigenous in Canada, the Crusades, forced conversions, and all the other bigotry you complain about being the result of “religion”. This is what bothers me about “Reddit Atheism.” It’s not about an honest engagement with religious beliefs, institutions, and the damage they can cause, it’s this smug oversimplification of the very human issue of trying to make every person who doesn’t look or think exactly like you more like you. Any criticism of religion that you make is almost always going to have to be tailored to the religious institution you’re criticizing, because, chances are, the problems within one religious community are going to be very different than the problems within another. Most of the problems you find within religious institutions (sexual abuse, isolating people from their loved ones, rampant purity testing) are found within secular institutions as well. The issue is a human one, abuse of power. There’s something to be said for the idea of divinely granted power, but there are plenty of religions that don’t believe their religious leaders have any sort of divine power.
