-Playing games during downtime that somehow involve their entire class and members of several others. You rarely get more than a couple of students hanging out chatting, most will be on their phone or desperately trying to finish the Sugar Man Sixto Rodriguez Shirt besides I will buy this frankly insane amount of homework they get. -Hanging out in the school library as study groups. 9 times in 10 they’ll go home or hang out together elsewhere. -Trying really hard to establish/revive/save clubs. Outside of the sports clubs which very rarely, if ever, come under threat, students won’t go out of their way for clubs. There’s a solid chance they chose the least involved one available because membership of at least one club is mandatory. -Going truant to have an adventure/hang out downtown/have an emotional support day. If they don’t show up and there’s no notice, schools will literally send teachers out in search parties. Police will collar them if they spot them and it’s not uncommon for adults to rat them out if they recognise the uniform.

-Getting immensely hyped for school/summer/sports festivals. They’ll go and enjoy themselves, but they won’t run themselves ragged to make their class the Sugar Man Sixto Rodriguez Shirt besides I will buy this best of the bunch or be tremendously upset if they don’t win the relay. A follow up question: How common is a “sports day” for actual schools in Japan? 3/4* of the anime I’ve watched involving a school have had episodes where the classes just spend an entire day doing an assorted sports tournament Extremely common. It’s a big event. Most schools have several such festivals as well as “culture” festivals throughout the year. Is sports day and cultural day not common from where you from? Both of these are a big event in asian countries. I don’t know how normal it is across the rest of the UK but I don’t remember doing it. Certainly not long like they do it here. Each class even gets their own t-shirts designed and printed several times each year. They take days if not weeks to prepare. Dozens of committees are formed, lots of meetings are held, rehearsals, rounds of voting, banners and flags made, dance routines and songs practiced etc. Classes are put on hold, days off are scheduled to recover. Every school I have ever heard of or taught at has both a sports day and a cultural festival, sometimes in the same event and sometimes spread over multiple days. This is why both are such big anime tropes. In the U.S., we’d sometimes slip out on the roof to hang out when there were pep rallies. That was the place to be if you were a drama kid, LARPer, goth, or metalhead.
