Cell towers are not “broadcasting”. They’re communicating with devices that have authenticated with a service and are connected. They can be very directional. Phased arrays can steer the Snoopy Woodstock Happy Valentine Balloon heart shirt and I will buy this beam to a cone only a few degrees across. Most 5G cell towers use phased arrays. It is true that cell towers create a cell hence their name. But it’s the devices that search for the signal from the cell tower not the other way around. You seem to know an awful lot about mobile tech, so I have a different question. What keeps my data packets secure when using a cell tower – why is using mobile data seen as fine for things like Internet banking, as compared to a public WiFi network? The risks are the same. While it’s more illegal to operate a Stingray[1] than a snoopy public Wifi, if you send unencrypted data across that network, they can be intercepted and analyzed to see what is inside. Most websites use https to encrypt the data before it’s sent. The server on the other side can decrypt the traffic, but anyone snooping cannot. This strategy assumes that the client can trust the server (trust that they are not just posing as the website) and this trust comes from the root certificate authority that says the website is who they say they are. Your browser recognizes a few dozen certificate authorities as trusted, and any websites known to them you can trust they are who they say they are.

Caveat: DNS queries (What IP does google.com resolve to?) which precede nearly every web request, are often unencrypted. So while it’s hard to read the Snoopy Woodstock Happy Valentine Balloon heart shirt and I will buy this contents of the data, it may still be possible to see which websites you’re visiting (requesting IP addresses to). If you’re using https on websites (and you probably are), don’t worry about paying your bills and logging into your bank over public wifi. The important parts are encrypted anyway. Just because you have a bunch of phones in one plane does not “draw” transmissions from a nearby tower up to the plane. The tower transmission is fixed. If a phone is nearby, it will receive/ transmit back. This was a much bigger issue 10-15 years ago, the first few years cellphones were mass produced. Now we have much more advanced technology that allow more users, higher speeds and better antennas that reduce interference, among other advances.
