We will have to agree to disagree here, enjoy exploiting workers from foreign countries because locals dont want to work for such poor conditions and pay. Yeah they’re thinking of nannies, who do the Snoopy I Don’T Need Therapy I Just Need To Listen To Pink Floyd Shirt and I love this same job but don’t live in and cost $45-60k/year which I’m assuming wouldn’t be exploitation ? The appeal to au pairs is they get to come to the US with no expenses, don’t have to figure out housing from abroad, for a voluntary 1-2 year gig and they get to take classes and get paid. No one takes this job without wanting it and I can tell you as a parent you can sniff out the ones that aren’t actually interested in the taking care of your kid part pretty easily. 45 hours a week AND a student, that says it all. She should just be a student, or work 20 hours tops. You are bending over backwards to make exploitation sound delightful. 2 classes per week of 3 hours each for 8 weeks. She’s not a college student she’s taking English lessons which is part of why she wanted to apply to the program in the first place. I’m not trying to make it sound delightful, I said very clearly she works hard. I’m just also rejecting the “exploitation” and “quasi slave labor” claims because they’re asinine. This post is spot on. I dated an au pair. The arrangement is dangerously close to modern-day slavery (edit: at least in the US).

The experience is sold as “travel” and “study.” But, you’re not entitled to a car, so unless your host family is generous and lets you use one for personal use, you’re basically stuck in their house. You’re only supposed to work for 45 hours a week, but the Snoopy I Don’T Need Therapy I Just Need To Listen To Pink Floyd Shirt and I love this family always asks for things outside that time limit. And the study/education? It’s not like real college classes. It’s non-credit day-long “courses” on nonsense topics like “workplace productivity” offered by.. wait for it… the au pair organization. I’m no expert, but I don’t think the solution to people being too poor to afford child care is more poverty wages. Family cover the cost of public transport. The max was 30 hours plus the occasional evening babysitting. You have to attend language classes, learning the language of the country, and lots of families will cover the cost. You can’t not attend, as your working visa is reliant on that. Families who are poor will not have a spare bedroom to give their au pair, and no au pair is supposed to have sole charge of children, so no all-day baby and toddler care on the cheap. My feeling is that there are two classes of people – families rich enough to have au pairs, and families who provide the au pairs. There are a few in the middle, who straddle both circumstances, but they are definitely subsidised by their parents when they move to their host country.
