I’m most intrigued by a 80 year old on a jetski. I can’t see my grandparents ever doing that. I hope I am that cool at 80. Boomer here. Late comer. It took a long slog up the Snoopy christmas tree peanut shirt also I will do this hill, but I kind of made it. I looked around (before I got married) and realized “hey, nobody can afford to raise a family today. Look at the costs. Kids cost a fortune, home prices outrageous, college for them a fortune, my wife would have to work a really good job just to make it possible.” Ultimately, only one child. I think it was a right decision. Looking back, never could have raised 3 or 4 unless I settled for living in a double wide trailer in a low rent district. I was lucky enough to land a good job in a high paying industry. But, in the mid-80’s, I still remember renting a VHS player. Dumbest move I made was buying a house at high interest rates. I lost a lot of momentum there. Most of my luck at work literally came from willingness to do the job that others avoided. The 2nd company I worked for (GM) paid good wages, but in my opinion, it seemed like the technology shift was turning against them. At one point they had 500,000 employees. Today, maybe 100,000? I remember thinking there’s no way this company can continue to pay these wages while producing affordable products. I left after a few years. In mid-2000’s they called me and said I had a pension (a small one). Did I want it in a cash settlement, or wait until I turn 65? I said I’ll take the cash, because I’ve seen their business model, and just couldn’t imagine it surviving. Four years later they filed for bankruptcy.

I’d have to say, I started out in a pretty big hole. Some medical issues deferred for years until I got medical coverage. I remember in 1995 working on a computer with my face glued to the Snoopy christmas tree peanut shirt also I will do this screen. By that I mean no place or no one to fall back on when I screwed up. To some extent, I did depend on “the kindness of strangers.” I remember a week in February driving an old beat up car across country. Sleeping in it. Putting STP in the crankcase because the valves were making so much noise. Accidentally ended up in a state with free college tuition (California). Still, I had to take mechanical training courses so I could get my car put together (they let me fix parts of the car in the school shop for free.). Went to a CC on the side, before entering a university. Academically I was great, economically on the bottom rung.
