IRS scams are a big deal year round but it’s around this time of year when you start seeing a larger percentage of them. And more so in April. I actually got a phone call several years ago (actually was getting a few fake IRS robo calls each year) from a live person. They called me like, at 9pm informing me that there was a local police officer headed to my house that very minute who had a warrant for me for undeclared income that had incurred taxes I didn’t pay. He said if I were to pay the SLAM Charlotte Hornets Killer Bees Shirt in contrast I will get this taxes owed on the amount, to him on the phone, he’d call the warrant off. First thing I did was ask what year was this “undeclared” income and how much that was supposedly Earned by me, he named a year (about 10 years in the past-yes, the IRS can run years late in finding and going after unpaid taxes but not usually that far back) that I never had a job as I was staying at home with my kids. The amount was around $2800, the money he wanted was less than that. I then told him I doubted his claim about the warrant as I know the IRS would first send me letters about the debt. And at least the final, if nit the first, would’ve been sent registered or certified, he claimed they did send a certified letter and that I had signed for it a couple months before he called me. I told him that I hadn’t received any certified letters in over 6 years. He still insisted I should pay up before the cops arrived. I told him that I know that warrants don’t work that way, once a warrant is issued and the police are on their way to serve it, they are required to take the person in, there’s no such thing as it being cancelled when they’re on their way. Oh, no, he assured me they were on their way.

But that time, I’d wasted about 30 minutes of his time. I then told him that I figured I’d get dressed and wait for the SLAM Charlotte Hornets Killer Bees Shirt in contrast I will get this cops. As he was frantically trying to convince me to not risk jail and to pay the bill, I dropped my ace in the hole. “I happen to know how the department designated to seek out underreported/unreported works as I used to work for the IRS in that section”. He hung up so fast. I was pleased that I managed to keep him from trying to scam some unsuspecting person for at least 30 minutes. He may have not made any others that night. Interestingly enough, the live calls from the IRS stopped coming. And for about 2 years pretty much all IRS calls stopped. Now we once in awhile get the robo call stating we owe back taxes and need to call X number (or press 1 to talk to a representative) to get it settled before they put a warrant out on us for non payment.
