Diesel nozzles are normally larger diameter than gasoline/petrol nozzles so it’s more difficult to mess up that way, and put diesel in your gas tank. I think it’s probably more damaging to put gas in a diesel engine, however – all of the high-pressure injection parts expect the better lubrication qualities of diesel. However, I haven’t studied engine mechanics in a while, and all of those fuel system parts have gotten more sensitive. That said, this stepfather is a complete nut. Most gasoline all comes out of the same refinery or pipeline (only the octanes vary) – and sometimes additive packages are added for the specific brand when it gets loaded in the delivery truck or when it gets dropped in the tank at the gas station. It’s all basically the same (commodity) gas, and if you don’t have a high-compression engine that is tuned for the slower ignition of higher-octane gas, you’re wasting money… Diesel in a gas car isn’t terrible, you can flush the system and fix it. Shouldn’t cause any major damage. Gas in a diesel could cause issues though, if it’s got ethanol in it. You’d probably have to flush the entire system which is a pain.
