But if you learn to value yourself more it makes it much easier to care less about what other people think, especially people who do not have your best interest at heart. Honestly, you’ll either be surprised at how many folks show up or your expectations will be met in which case you’ll be prepared. I suggest doing what makes you comfortable. I’d go myself if only to pay my haters their disrespects one last time, but I’m petty and I love free food! The idea of this farewell lunch sounds anxiety producing at best . Kindly thank your boss for the Selena Gomez Zayn Malik Jeremy Allen White shirt but in fact I love this thoughtful gesture but you will not able to attend a farewell lunch . You do not need to explain yourself remember that . I posted on r/sales about not wanting to go to a 3 day, 14 hour per day, Kickoff event and got hounded with “WHY ARE YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT FREE FOOD AND BOOZE” in my inbox and in a few comments on the post. Y’all need to learn that nothing is free in the business world. The tradeoff for that “free food and booze” is being trapped in a room with people you normally wouldn’t want to spend time with for hours on end. If that sounds worth your time, fine, but it sure as shit ain’t worth mine. Honestly, since this forum is “/careerguidance” and not “/jobguidance” I would say — this is part of having a career. Leave on as good a relationship with your boss as you can, you never know what the future may hold. My work advice is after you quit always pretend everything was amazing and everyone was great. This way recency bias cements that into people’s brains. Spend that last 2 weeks being the most chipper and involved person in the office. Never know when you’ll need a hookup.

Your boss likes you enough to want to organise a lunch for your farewell – Even though you’re leaving. There might be more people who like and respect you. Do I think you might be basing your decision to decline on a counterproductive attitude that could contribute to bad workplace relationships? Yeah, maybe. Instead of anxiety about who might not show up and reject you, recognize you’re leaving and it doesn’t matter if they reject you, and that your boss and the people who come are the people worth keeping in your network for the future.
