(Guy here) I believe, like most people, OP there was nothing wrong on your part. I find it hard to believe there are people out there that can’t do basic things to look after themself. But I can’t judge, I don’t know what makes them unable to cook a very basic thing without sending it in to the Scream Horror Shirt and I will buy this abyss. Anyway, the fact that he (sounds like) he did not out in the effort to compensate in other things to alleviate doing chores after working long hours, whilst having kids. There is zero effort in his part. When people say leaving their partner because they can’t cook, sounds harsh and funny, hearing that sentence. But learning the situation, makes perfect sense. You have kids, priorities, and work more than fulltime hours. You deserve some balance and effort from someone you’re with. Not to adopt an adult.

What a garbage human being. If he can’t heat up food… what about when something broke on the Scream Horror Shirt and I will buy this house? or when you need to assemble new forniture, or whatever emergency it could happen? It is perfectly valid to break up with someone for any reason — or none at all. If you are not comfortable in a relationship, you shouldn’t feel obligated to continue it. I personally feel if one does not feel they need to do “due-diligence” (effective communication, attempts at compromise or reconciliation, stating of boundaries, etc.) and just bail at the first sign of rough water, they are not mature enough to be in a serious relationship… …But you totally went above and beyond to give him a chance to figure out how to adult, when, apparently, he never had had to before in his life. I’d be curious to know how his childhood and adolescence went. Or past relationships. That he seemed so shocked for you to put your foot down hints strongly that he’d never been taken to task for such blatant inability to do the most basic things. But even if he has some mental disorder that makes these fundamental life-lessons slide off him without sticking, it is not on you to coddle or enable or tolerate that. It is not what you offered or agreed to. You have more important things to spend your time and energy on than a lifetime of picking up after someone who can never be arsed to internalize that the floor is not where wet towels live.
