I think I heard him discussing it on one of his Guru Viking podcast appearances (perhaps this one?). He decided that trying to stop identifying with the body was not enlightened So, it wouldn’t make sense that he would deprive himself of food or sleep. If you eat mindfully, you are still meditating. Remember, Buddhist meditation is about knowing what’s happening while it’s happening and accepting it without judgment. It is not about obtaining an altered state of reality. It is about being fully present with reality.

Well, states like this are helpful to that end. Conciousness is awareness, to be conscious of something you have to be aware. The ultra majority of people are not aware when they sleep. It is most definitely not always present. You can be unaware one moment and aware at another point in time aware that you were unaware at that previous time. In this example, if someone started smashing things up in my room, I would have woken. So it seems more like a lack of things to be aware of, rather than a lack of awareness. The room was still there to be aware of when you were sleeping the bed was still warm, but your consciousness did not exist until the was a physical stimulus that triggered the brain to regain consciousness. The stimulus is an external trigger for the brain to wake up. Your body and brain can be active in MANY ways totally outside of your awareness.. The biggest leap I have observed in this conversation is the assertion that your consciousness does not exist until a physical stimulus triggers it. I can only conclude that your definition of consciousness is one that completely identifies it with the biochemical computer / egoic conceptual constructs of the body/brain/mind. Consciousness itself is the observer of the phenomenon that you are ascribing consciousness to.
