Our bodies actually don’t trigger a suffocation panic response from a lack of oxygen, it triggers from an excess of carbon dioxide. While I am morally opposed to the death penalty on principle, if places are going to carry out executions, this is the way to do it with minimal suffering. Personally I don’t see anything wrong with this. It’s by far the most humane form of execution and there are some fucking horrible “people” that should be executed. 71 people have been executed in Alabama since 1976. All because they killed one or more other human beings in particularly cold ways. There were 6,110 abortions in Alabama….in 2017 alone. No matter which side of the aisle or debate you rest, equating capital punishment and abortion are foolish. I was under the impression that when people call themselves pro-life in regards to whether or not it should be allowed to kill babies, it doesn’t somehow automagically mean that they MUST be pro-life when it comes to preserving the lifes of criminals that committed so crimes so horrendous that they’d been sentenced to capital punishment. I just don’t see the contradiction here, sorry. You COULD criticise them from the viewpoint of Christianity, because as I understand the majority of republicans claim to be “God-fearing Christians” and I don’t remember the Bible saying anything in favour of executing people, but that’s not the point you’re making.

If you’re against the capital punishment but there’s nothing you can do to eradicate this practice completely, then making people on a death row breathe nitrogen is like the second best thing you’ve got, really. This is societal harm reduction: I don’t really agree with the death penalty but at least we’re moving away from the “I want them to suffer” crowd. Similar to I don’t want you to be addicted and using but at least you’re not sharing dirty needles. I think this should be celebrated and the death penalty being administered or not handled separately. I am against the death penalty but I have always wondered why this wasn’t implemented. It would be humane and work every time assuming they were delivered pure nitrogen. FAR better than other methods employed in the US.
