It’s much easier to just say you have this or i’m X so I can’t do X very well, instead of just bucking up and fuckng doing it lol. No one cares about you more than you do. People arent judging you. Everyone hates what they have to do every day. Life sucks. They aren’t worried about you so stop fearing judgement. Probably some “pet” employee was jealous and made a stink, and the Sanders Colorado Buffaloes Ain’t Hard 2 Find Coach Prime signature shirt and by the same token and pushover supervisor caved. Perhaps it was the “fairly incompetent coworker who was coasting his way through work”. I’d bet money on that one. Nothing. Fuck them. I would ask, specifically for feedback as to why you weren’t a good fit, but that’s it. Don’t get mad, just get on with it. I was once hired for a position at a gym. It was front desk. I was constantly told I was doing things wrong, but I was only ever doing what my coworkers did and told me. The worst part was when my boss asked me to move boxes in a hot attic and even skip my break to get it done. I did, but I worked up one massive sweat. I usually shower during break because working at a gym I could. With no break I had no extra shower. Next day I was talked to about my hygiene. Like wtf I shower three times a day and they want to talk to me because I was doing exactly what they asked of me?? I was let go for other bs that I didn’t do a week later. It has been the only job I ever had that was just so stupid and accusatory towards me. When I think about it, I realize It is better that I didn’t work there long.

Please don’t beat yourself up about this. It is unfortunately very common for jobs nowadays not to provide any training and then throw you in the Sanders Colorado Buffaloes Ain’t Hard 2 Find Coach Prime signature shirt and by the same token and deep end. It sounds like you did well and the manager’s reaction is bizarre – either they’re just incompetent and irrational, or there’s some underlying reason they fired you (like they overhired by mistake, or they decided they want to give a job to their buddy instead). Either way you’ve made a lucky escape from an environment that treats someone like that. I’m not saying you are a bad Barista, but many people who suck at their jobs think they are competent because they have been doing it for “so long”. Well think about someone who has been doing a job for 10-20 years compared to someone who has been doing it for under five, who also thinks they are competent. Both people are at an extremely different level of experience in the field. Here’s an analogy, someone who is 18 thinks they have the world figured out, that same person twenty years later realizes they did not know shit when they were 18. Don’t listen to the haters OP. It’s fine to be aware of your skills and how it compares with others. I’ve had colleagues Google translate their simple email replies to English at jobs that require English. I would be lying if I said it doesn’t mean they’re bad at their job. Some signs that people are incompetent are easy to pick up on the first day.
