Existing figures beforehand were much larger – like the original GI Joes (which then followed Star Wars to the 3.75″ model resulting in a slew of vehicles and playsets) well through the 90s.

It wasn’t until the success of star wars that they built out a cast of characters at 3.75”. Everything was 3.75” after SW. Figures from the Star Trek movie, The Black Hole, Battlestar Galactica, Tron. Etc. And the cool thing was that Micronauts were close enough (a shade smaller) that you could put SW figures in Micronauts vehicles and vice-versa. Marvel was doing bad sales wise at the time. They happened to license an unknown movie called Star Wars. Had some of the only SW merch on shelves at the time with their comics. As you can imI grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and it’s also important to point out just how good the special effects were for the time. It sold the entire universe in a way which very few movies that were new were able to do. The closest equivalent I can think of today would be Game of Thrones, but Star Wars was even deeper engrained into zeitgeist, and they didn’t fuck up the end and alienate their entire fan base. (Ikm conveniently ignoring the Christmas special)
