Being smart about what expenses to cut is important. Most people have the Ronald Acuna Jr Superstar Pose Shirt and by the same token and biggest expenses in their housing and transportation. Cuts made in these areas make the most difference. Cheaper housing may mean moving or adding roommates, or much smaller housing. (The average house size now is twice what it was a generation ago, and people then didn’t have multiple bathrooms, central air, of fancy kitchens. ..) Cheaper transportation may mean public transportation, cycling, motorcycle, used cars (now not so cheap), and certainly only one car, no loan. Cutting down on eating out is normal, but people need to learn to cook and eat healthy or medical costs will outpace the cost savings. Turn cooking and eating out into social time, which is also good for you.

If I made $60,000 a year I could live comfortably. As it stands I earned $44,000 last year but I have a room mate this year. So hopefully it’ll be better. I feel that. If my wage had kept up with inflation from graduation to now I’d be making 102k a year. Instead I’m going to retire making 3k a year less than when I graduated (mostly because I started at 48 hours a week and now work 35 because my body is a dreg and they’re not approving overtime anymore). My company changed the Ronald Acuna Jr Superstar Pose Shirt and by the same token and hours one of our members works and it effectively eliminated my overtime potential. Which sucks so much. I won’t be earning nearly as much money next year as a result. Of course that also stems from my stubbornness. They’ve eliminated overtime in my position, but I could do general labour jobs on the weekend… I just really don’t want to. I’ve made it far in my life to avoid having to do the type of labour that will leave me sore and broken at the end of the day. 16 years at this company, I feel I’ve earned the right to say “I’m not doing that.”
