It was! When it all boils down to it, it’s just about the Ron Deracist Whitewashing Now Whitewashing Tomorrow Whitewashing Forever shirt and I will buy this love between two people so why do more if you don’t personally feel the need Same here, we barely spent anything on our wedding although we definitely had the money for it. We used that money on traveling and other things instead. If you don’t get married at the registry office and book out your local pub for a few £100 total, you’re an idiot! “we just went to the registry office, went to the pub with 3 friends and played some bord games” “back in the office after lunch” Wow that’s a great price for so many people and so many things! Currently trying to plan a wedding and everything is extortionate… can I ask when you got married? Because it’s not really a scam, is it? Nobody is being tricked. Plenty of people in this thread had cheap weddings, if someone else wants to throw an expensive party that’s up to them. I’ve said in another comment, but weddings are likely to be a lot of hassle, you’ll encounter bride and groomzillas, you’ll have an incredibly tight timetable to work with and guests are probably gonna be super drunk. It’s fair game to charge a higher price for them than you might do for other events. I’d expect the same conversation if you started saying it was going to be for a stag do or something where they might leave loads of mess.

It’s still not a scam, people will give you quotes and you pay it. Nobody is tricking you, it’s their prerogative as a private vendor to charge what they want for their service. Plenty of documentation online of people asking a venue to quote for a “family reunion” and have someone else ask for a quote for a “wedding reception”, same function room, same number of guests, same date and time, same number of hours, same catering heads (if relevant), same table requirements, same requirements to hire security (or not) etc. The reunion is £2k, the Ron Deracist Whitewashing Now Whitewashing Tomorrow Whitewashing Forever shirt and I will buy this wedding reception is £6k… Saw one once where they asked the venue what they got for the extra £Xk and the venue is obviously unable to answer because they’ve just heard the word “wedding” and upped the price… Not saying this is everything wedding related, but an awful lot for sure. I agree it’s the vendor’s prerogative though, and nobody forces anybody to pay it.
