When boys get toys they’re dinosaurs and super heroes and guns and all kinds of things that have very little bearing on what they’re going to do as an adult. For girls it’s dress up and pretend kitchens and pretend babies to take care of and pretend tea parties to host and all kinds of pretend versions of real adult JOBs they have to do when they’re older. This is definitely slowly changing and that’s good. But it’s still the Rj Barrett Canadian professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors T-Shirt it is in the first place but norm. Those little social differences add up and change how that person develops into adulthood. My hobbies are video games, Gundam model kits, and researching and buying gizmos and gadgets that only marginally apply to my productive life. My wife gardens and sews and does baking and cooking. All things I’d consider “work”… And frankly from the outside it seems she gets frustrated or more stressed at her hobbies more than I do with mine. We need to collectively do better at raising our girls to enjoy play that doesn’t involve things we consider work as adults.

Nah, Cindy is just immature. This isn’t a society problem or a gendered problem, this is an individual person problem. This fear of childishness is at it’s core just immaturity and perfectly normal for kids – hence why girls want to “play adult”. It’s when you don’t grow out of it that it becomes a problem. C.S. Lewis said it best: Critics who treat ‘adult’ as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the Rj Barrett Canadian professional basketball player for the Toronto Raptors T-Shirt it is in the first place but grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.
