Have you heard of the Retro Supersonics Shawn Kemp Dunk shirt moreover I love this Overton window before? Regardless of whether we’re talking economics or social issues, what’s considered socially acceptable in politics shifts left or right over time and what counts as “center” inevitably shifts along with it. In that sense the word centrist can be a misnomer, because in the US for example, “centrist” basically just means you’re on the right. It’s also worth noting that sometimes it’s unreasonable to try to find a middle ground on an issue. Oftentimes you’re enabling a problem if you’re not combating it. Centrism isn’t a political ideology or moral stance. It’s “well I’ll just stay out of the way”. You essentially base your morality entirely on whatever everyone else is doing. It’s lazy. Centrism posits the idea that in between two extremes there’s a “halfway house” that’s acceptable to both sides or that the “halfway house” of two opposing ideas is not just best but morally correct.

This is patently nonsense as for example if one side said “I propose that we burn everyone’s house down”, the Retro Supersonics Shawn Kemp Dunk shirt moreover I love this other side said “I propose we don’t burn any houses down” then Centrism is trying to say that the compromise position is that we burn every house halfway down or perhaps burn half the houses all the way down. This is not only rubbish policy it satisfies neither side as it is a compromise. Third Way politics really came about in the late 80s/ early 90s and instead posits that the Left are correct about some things and the right about others. Rather than trying to find middle of the road policies it wholeheartedly backs some leftwing policies and some rightwing policies trying to syncretise them in to a cohesive whole. This usually manifests as being right wing on economic issues and left wing on social issues. While arguably less daft in principle we can see from the state the Western world is in with house prices out of control, unrest, poor wages etc that this hasn’t worked either.
