Stigma is generally a good way to discourage a behavior and unless you have a better idea how to discourage something, I am all ears. Edit:a lot of redditors were upset with my use of the word “stigma”. Perhaps I’ve used it wrong all of these years, but I just meant it as “something that goes against generally accepted social norms”, or alternatively something that is discouraged in society. I wasn’t proposing that pregnant teens wear a Scarlet Letter and spend a day in the stocks being pelted by vegetables.

Well, that’s the thing, how do you discourage a practice without stigmatizing people–people who, I think, deserve a certain baseline level of dignity and empathy. I don’t really think a PR campaign against teen pregnancy is necessary. I’d hazard to guess that most teens don’t, in fact, want to get pregnant in the first place, and bullying and ostracizing the women who find themselves in such a situation seems counter-productive. Much like how our “lets sneer at the fatty fat fatties and their disgusting fatness” strategy hasn’t accomplished much in moving the needle in the obesity epidemic.
