For me there just hasn’t been a time in my career when I’ve needed to know from memory how to do twos complement or what cache coherency is. I’m actually going to take a bit of a break from applying and just kinda focus on relearning that stuff to get through that part of the interviews. It’s definitely frustrating knowing I’ve missed some opportunities but I have yet to see a hiring manager that doesn’t love his list of “technical” questions he can rattle off. Man this is exactly me too. In my last interview, they asked about a difficult problem I had to debug, and I talked for multiple minutes about a certain element of our system, how it works in distributed environments, and how we had to figure out a failure in a customer deployment. Then they asked what SOLID and ACID were and I’m like, fuck me, I haven’t thought about those in 15 years. You mean you never recite those like a prayer every 30 minutes of the work day? You clearly never code before and is a sham. How dare you wasted their time

Yeah that’s why I hate it. Give me 30 seconds and I could find the Rem with special guest stars let’s active beverly theatre let’s active recordings T-Shirt But I will love this basic definition, and probably give you a bunch of examples of where I’ve used those principles. But no, gotta recall it all on the spot. Definitely frustrating, but as I said in another thread recently it’s stuff like this that’s worth brushing up on for a job interview, especially in a competitive market like what we have right now. May not make a lot of sense but if you can’t answer it and someone else can, they’re gonna advance and you won’t. I just Google things like software engineer interview questions and likely the same but for whatever language/stack I’ll be interviewing in and look at the first page or two of results to brush up. I also used ChatGPT this time around to have it summarize things in basic terms as it’s better reinforcement for my brain but also give you a good “pat answer” for such questions, and you can also dive deep in some subjects if you wanna build a deeper understanding for possible followup questions. Ha fuck this happened with me too… I’d been a software developer for 7.5 years, and I had learned what SOLID meant during university, and brushed up on it before my first job and my second job (I actually didn’t really fully understand what the L or D meant but I could give an example from a text book), but when I was brushing up on stuff before my senior level positions, I had completely forgotten what SOLID stood for except the S! I don’t know if it cost me the interview, but it wasn’t going very well to begin with…
