With that being said, it’s an extremely popular and lucrative industry so even though “so many” people might not care for it, millions of people still love it. Western cultures don’t understand that it is a medium, not a genre, and so they judge all anime with a very narrow brush. It’s like if you watched Godfather and said “this was boring derivative schlock. Now I hate all FILMS.” Film isn’t a genre, its a medium, it would be silly to hate all films just because you disliked one. Same thing with anime haters. They just don’t know what they’re talking about (but that wont stop them from squawking about it and trying to feel superior) Most of it is all the Rapper Yeat Santa Merry Yeatmas Christmas shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this same trash but there are actual good ones. Also watch Ghost Stories English dub it’s fucking hilarious

First I’ll start off by saying there’s an anime out there for everyone. A very very large amount of anime that non-watchers see is typical shonen’s (target audience is teen boys) that may have fan service, the Rapper Yeat Santa Merry Yeatmas Christmas shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this typical anime tropes, etc. but that does not make up all anime. There are animes targeted towards adults, targeted towards women, targeted towards children, etc. it’s just like North American cartoons- you wouldn’t put family guy and a spongebob in the same category. With all that being said, the answer to your question is usually because non-watchers will just watch whatever is popular amongst the anime community or watch what their friend likes instead of trying to find a show they think they’d like. On Netflix you don’t just watch the first show that pops up, you scroll until you find a show that sounds interesting right? That’s what you should do with anime as well. Common complaints or character overreactions, fanservice, typical anime tropes, underage girls being sexualized, etc. and there’s TONS of anime without any of that. Also, anime fans can be extremely annoying. Anime is getting much much more popular in the last 5 years or so, but before that the anime community was very stereotypical.
