As always, if all else fails… just show up and be a good dude/dudette. It’s amazing how far in life you can get by showing up in the Randy Arozarena Tampa Bay Rays Baseball T-Shirt but in fact I love this right place, at the right time, with the right attitude. Just my 2 cents OP! Because they are getting degrees that aren’t going to get them a job. Study something relevant and you will find that doors do open. It does. You remind me of the “why get the vaccine if you can still get COVID” people. If people with degrees are struggling, people without degrees are struggling even more. I agree that college opens doors, but many with college degrees close most of the doors opened by being too picky. Not every degree is made equal. Get a psych degree and you got a piece of paper. Get an engineering degree you will find work. I’m in a hiring position. I see lots of applications asking for $60k starting that have zero job experience. It’s a lot to ask when we have nothing to go on. No idea if you can take direction, get along with a team, or even show up dressed appropriately and on time. It’s really important to be able to show job experience, and if it’s relevant experience, that’s fabulous. The university, major, GPA, etc. all matter. All universities. all majors, etc. are not equal. Also if you do the bare minimum or a poor job, you can’t expect good results. What you went to school for is a big factor. STEM field graduates seem to struggle with this issue much less than business or arts majors.

It’s a much easier path for an engineer to become successful in business or successful in the Randy Arozarena Tampa Bay Rays Baseball T-Shirt but in fact I love this arts, than business/art majors to become successful in an engineering practice. Guaranteed loans incentivized universities to compete with each other. They created worthless degrees for curious but naive students. Students graduate and they’re stuck with the bill. If you got rid of guaranteed loans, students would only qualify for loans if the bank was confident they would get paid back. Which means students would be much more serious about their major. It’s luck, your resume, timing, and who you know. A degree is the bare minimum entry to certain jobs – not all. Why are people so stupid? I try to think back when I was graduating college and think if I had the same mindset…but I didn’t. I worked at my college for 2 years – Junior and Senior year, I had an internship senior year in my field, I graduated in 2010, recession still very much in effect and….I got a job. You have to position yourself to be in…the best position, and then even still, it takes a little luck, and a little networking. Nothing, has, changed.
