There is a real anti medication sentiment out there, real stigma of illness, and it only needs a nudge. Sure criticize the Ramaswamy Vivek Hope Poster Shirt besides I will buy this power structure but there’s no reason to encourage stigmatizing ourselves. Absolutely. I see a ton of socialist conversations that appear to utterly devalue mood disorders and their treatment as a capitalist plot. Only someone who hasn’t had a mood disorder could think such a thing. It can end up falling into the other side of the same coin as the “successful people can’t have depression” attitude. Depression isn’t the same as being generally bummed about the state of things; it’s a chemical imbalance that leaves people physically incapable of appreciating the good things in their lives. The stigma towards those with mental health issues is equally strong between my religious conservative family and my hippy, anti-capitalist friends. It’s disappointing and unfortunately feeds my anxiety about my SMIs preventing me from ever fitting in.
