With socialized healthcare, generally it is a better deal for the tax payer. Buying medicine and related things in bulk is a lot more cost effective. There is less fear of being bankrupt from being ill. In the States, it might be difficult because private health can easily lobby. It would be worse with government contracts on the line as the private sector has some influence in politics. In my experience, Americans are most familiar with Central American free healthcare that is undeniable worse. When free healthcare gets brought up, Americans point their fingers at that to prove that free healthcare would be like having no healthcare.
