I think they should have hired a drag queen for Ursula since she was based on a drag queen. There are multiple drag queens who have performed her song. I should have loved Ginger to be Ursula but there is no way in hell Disney is hiring someone with the Premium kung Fu Panda Retro Japanese T-Shirt and I will buy this name ‘Ginger Minj’ loool Yeah and everyone was already tagging this as too woke so imagine how much more of a culture war firestorm it would be when you add a non-binary drag queen. Let’s be honest here, they hired based on whatever star power Melissa McCarthy has, she has been leading comedies for a decade. Especially with a newcomer to the movies as the lead. Here’s a friendly reminder that Melissa McCarthy was in fact a drag queen at the beginning of her career who mainly made her name as a Divine impersonator and even preformed at wigstock. There’s very few people as qualified (impo) to be Ursula as she is Ok. So did she not look at what this guy did to her face? A Divine impersonator playing a Divine-inspired sea witch looked at that make up and went with it? While I would have loved to see a drag queen play the role, honestly Melissa McCarthy absolutely killed it. It was just as soulless and mediocre as the rest of the live action remakes, but her scenes were incredible. Being LGBTQ would help in the sense that one would likely have a better understanding of the visual references for Ursula. It’s not a requirement, but it helps.

Also there’s an element of survival in queer makeup. A correct makeup application increases our chances of passing and therefore of not getting assaulted. Thanks. Also… was this look just done for a short video or the one actually used in the movie? I’m hoping if it was for filming I would hope someone on set was like “hey… yeah no.” Upon seeing the film multiple times and also seeing BTS footage of McCarthy, I’m almost positive this was a rush job for the sake of the video. She doesn’t even wear the wig in filming, as it was CGI’d in to simulate the water movement. The filming footage shows her scenes with a wig cap on, just like Halle had. Regardless – it was still touched up in post production and doesn’t look like this in the movie. It’s a basic outline or pattern but it is a cleaner look with the fine tuning.
