I have meditation built into my routine now, 20 minutes a day when I get home from work. Sometimes it flows and I get a deep meditation, sometimes I get a scattered one, and sometimes it doesnt work at all. But I always lay down and rest a bit, and feel better afterwards. One of the reasons it took me so long to really understand how to meditate is that no one ever really explained it to me in a way that made sense to me. I have a very literal, logical mind so when people say something like “Embrace and accept your thoughts” it really doesn’t make any sense to me. How can I “accept” a thought? What does that mean? Do I say yes? What does it mean to “let go” of a thought? I’m not holding it. It finally made sense to me when it was described to me as “attention,” and meditation is just the practice of intentionally controlling attention. This cognitive explanation made a lot more sense to me than bodily metaphors or “letting anything go” ever did. I don’t know if “my way” will make any more or less sense to you! But hopefully one day you’ll come across an explanation that syncs with you. If you’re anything like me, it’ll be as contrasting as night and day!

Here’s some bonus speculation. I have no idea if this is true or not, and maybe some more experienced people can chime in. However, once I started thinking about meditation as controlled attention, I started using my eyes to meditate. Even if my eyes were closed, I would move them in their sockets as if I were looking at whatever I was focussing on, be that a sound or part of my own body in a body scan. In humans, attention and vision are closely linked (I did my PhD on this exact topic) so I wondered if I could guide my attention by making eye movements even with my eyes closed. It seemed to really work for me, but I’m just one person and biased since it’s my idea lol.
