It was based on my assumption that anime always fit a ‘style’ that had those ‘animeisms’ in it. (Those loud exaggerated reactions to minor things, the speech talk the female leads have, etc.) It was only until I gave some anime a shot for my gf that I realized that ‘anime’ as a genre is much larger and more varied than I previously believed, and there are shows that I genuinely believe would be more mainstream/popular if given the chance by the wider public. At least for me it was just assuming I understood the style and believed it wasn’t for me because of a few bad examples that were my first introduction to the genre, and that has been the case for most of my friends as well. Mostly it’s the boring (or lacking) plot, sexualization, and the fact that not everyone is into Japanese culture.

I used to watch a lot of anime, but after reading a lot of mangas and watching anime it felt like non of it is original enough to become worthy of time. Despite very interesting plots and ideas, nearly all of them blurr into same use of tropes – and I mean carboard cutout use of tropes. Stop calling every show a masterpiece. Anime watchers seems to have a low bar regarding what’s a great show. The ratio to good anime to bad is too great, so it is likely to run int the typical stuff that others mentioned. I had to filter heavily from my list to only include which are kinda unique, not an anime stereotype and not just isekai nr 452.
