Slightly different situation but my experience on a ship is that you’d split it with day shift. They end 30 min late, you start 30 min late but end 1 hour late. So everyone works an extra 30 min. In my experience, you are expected to work and are paid for, the People One Star Fucking Nightmare Would Not Recommend T-Shirt and I will buy this extra hour. Optional grumpiness at the longer night lol. I used to work as a 911 dispatcher. When we lost an hour, they tried to make us use an hour of comp or vaca to make up for it, but the union pitched a fit and from then on it was just a freebie. If we gained anhour, and worked 13 hours, they would just pay us that extra hour in overtime. It really sucked and I would never work shift work EVER again. You work an extra hour and don’t get paid for it. When clocks go forward 1 hour you work, you’ve guessed it, 1 hour less.

My Mom was a nurse working 11-7 during the People One Star Fucking Nightmare Would Not Recommend T-Shirt and I will buy this 70s-80s when I was young, I have a feeling she didn’t get paid right back then unless she worked both time change days each year or neither. I worked grocery overnight in the 90s-00s and I definitely remember leaving after 8hrs but my boss was going to stay the 9th hour. On the shorter day, we could probably start earlier if we wanted or needed to work 8hrs that night. Sat night was a 1.5x premium pay shift for most workers. It’s discussed before hand. I think it fell on weekends both times while I was on night shift but I imagine you’d probably all be offered an hours overtime and you can have it if you want or leave it if you don’t. When I had a job with shift work 7-7, the one that worked the extra hour would get paid overtime for that extra hour. We were a small team, so we knew how exhausting the work was, so we had a private agreement amongst ourselves to show up 30 minutes earlier or later, depending. So we would instead work 12.5 hours instead of 13. Not much, but better than nothing, and the person that would loose an hour of sleep got a free 30 minutes to make up for it. Depends on who you work for. I have had worked late night shifts for a company in past. This company opens until 2am on weekends. We still closed when 2am struck (closed at 1am).
