For Buddhism’s broader purpose, I don’t think insects and humans are that different in terms of living beings, the Peanut characters Penrith Panthers shirt and I love this Buddha said humans are unique in our capacity to understand the Dharma. The free will thing is a conceptual problem. We are free to act as we will, so long as we aren’t under any external constraints, but we don’t decide what we will, that arises along with everything else. The consciousness is more complex with humans, so we tend to think that our life is full of decisions but we overlook how we get to this decisions. You walked for 11 hour through the city and your legs hurt. You see a bank but before you can sit down to relax the pain of your legs, it starts to rain. If getting wet is less pain than you have in your legs, you will decide to sit down in the rain. Otherwise if the leg-pain is not that bad, you probably walk on to a dry place. Even if you decide to enjoy the rain, you just diud the trick to change the perspective and make something enjoyable out of a bad situation.

Maybe brain size needs to be above a certain critical threshold for something like free will (if it even exists in humans) to emerge? The entire concept of free will has never been shown to be rationally coherent to begin with. So you might want to work on that first. Why you think we have it and insects don’t is not even suggested here and playing “what if” with ideas that are as insubstantial as the Peanut characters Penrith Panthers shirt and I love this existence of unicorns is interesting only insomuch as that there are actually people that disagree with this. Not to put too fine a point on it but true “free will” does not exist and our perception of free will is actually a very interesting topic in psychology. Because insects don’t have the capacity to contemplate or contemplate their contemplations or contemplate their contemplations on contemplations and so on. We have the illusion of free will, that’s enough for me. Philosophically speaking we likely don’t have free will, because of determinism Just because you don’t know it’s motivation doesn’t mean there isn’t one. The universe has free will by exsisting Our ability to remove ourself from ourselves and take a good hard look at ourselves and can choose to change that which we find undesirable about ourselves. We all know animals have intelligent minds and if they could talk we’d be interested in what they had to say. Yet, animals can’t change their natural desires. We can. At this stage of our existence, we must adapt to a higher thought process, a higher frequency, higher energy…or we stay a just a real smart animal. The next level of existence requires specific types of energy , frequency, etc. The lower beings on this planet aren’t able to make the necessary choice to override their natural instincts and sadly are able to make it to anything other then human. In order to make it to the next level it takes a mind on the level of humans, alien equivalent, etc. Be good to each other, you deserve it.
