How is it even legal for ownership to take tips? Such horse shit. Blow them up online, call corporate. Something. That’s wrong on so many levels. Maybe they’d prefer you keep that tip money to pay for your future medical bills caused by eating Chinese buffet every day. This pop up usually has options of no tip, [10%, 15%, 20%], a sliding scale, or it can let you put in a dollar amount. In this case the OP has been putting in $2 but now the staff chooses [no tip] for him instead of giving him the opportunity to tip them.

Thank you. That all makes so much more sense to me now. It’s obviously because the Paxon high school alumni eagle shirt and I love this staff aren’t getting the money. That’s 20%. For a buffet. Where they presumably do nothing more than seat you at your table and MAYBE bring you a drink. Occasionally they’ll come around to take an empty plate away (though if OP is only spending $10, they probably aren’t eating enough that they need their table cleaned more than once). This happens to me at my favorite Mexican place. I think the intent is to make sure YOU get to choose to tip. I think they are just being nice. If I had to take a guess perhaps someone from there culture decided to double down on what they do back in Asia ? My work tells us to skip past the tip screen before turning the screen around when checking out customers and I friggin love it. I think I can actually answer this one: a lot of Asian restaurants have started charging a 10-15% service charge on top of the bill. They explicitly say this isn’t a tip, but also say you do not need to leave a tip on top. It’s weird. First encountered this in southern cal, but have seen it up in the bay area as well. My favorite Chinese buffet would politely argue with me any time I tried to leave a tip. If I left a few dollars on the table my next meal was discounted by a few dollars. My best friend as a child (40 years ago) was Chinese and he told me that many Chinese see a tip as an insult, sort of like you feeling sorry for them, though I would assume they’d change their perspective living in the US for years. Every time I try a new restaurant I ask if the servers/staff get to keep the tips. Most of the time they do, but 10-15% of the time they say no so I don’t tip. It’s an easy question to ask and will solve the problem for you.
