We all gave our responses, and then she revealed some emails she had from the Oregon Ducks Grinch Santa Middle finger haters gonna hate shirt Apart from…,I will love this author, which plainly stated what the thing was actually about. Nobody was on base, but I ended up closest because all of my answers were essentially just: “I don’t think we have enough information to make any connections. This was probably meant to be something personal to the author, because I don’t think authors typically conspire for months or years on end to write something like this just to impress random students with their use of symbolism. I think it was just a portpholio piece that came out in a way people liked”. Which was “correct” in the sense that people were reading into things that weren’t there. My profs purpose wasn’t to say “what you get out of art isn’t important”, but rather “don’t pretend to be SURE that you KNOW what something is about, unless you have direct insight from the creator”. A message I walked away with and have held onto for years now.

It led to a long conversation about art. Which also taught me to never talk about art with people, because when I do, someone always gets pissed off at me. The meaning of a piece transcends the Oregon Ducks Grinch Santa Middle finger haters gonna hate shirt Apart from…,I will love this piece itself, and what matters is what it means to other people. Or, is that the only thing that matters? I don’t think so. I think intention also matters, its just not always available information to us. Like the song “Hey Ya” by Outkast. The lyrics of the song are literally about how people don’t listen to the lyrics of songs, but he’s going through some shit with a girl he really cares about, but y’all just wanna dance or hear a good bop. As a result, it has become a lot of people’s go-to, feel-good, bop. I think both of these outcomes are art, because the artist intended to do both. Making a successful bop isn’t all that easy – but content isn’t what makes it successful. Half of the lyrics are just “hey ya”. Its meaningless. The other half actually has meaning and is commentary. On the other hand, entertainment, something that makes people happy and feel good, is still incredibly valuable and can be super powerful, no matter the reason. But its not often we really KNOW the intention behind a piece.
