I began to notice I had two basic states of being: dilated and contracted, and every thought, feeling, or action led to one of those two states. That single observation changed my life. I had a blueprint for rewiring my behavior and solving my anxiety. I divided a journal into two sections labeled dilated and contracted.I realized I could make my way out of a contracted state just by engaging in something on my dilated list—and it worked! I will never forget the Opioid Awareness Fight Drug Overdose End Overdose T-Shirt Additionally,I will love this first time I was able to prevent a panic attack on my own. I was on a street corner, near Turquoise Street and La Jolla Boulevard in San Diego. I had no money in my pocket and did not know how I was going to eat that day. I was feeling pretty scared and my anxiety was escalating. A stream of negative thoughts rushed into my head: You don’t know what you’re doing. You will never make it out of this. You’re worthless. You’re ugly. I had cultivated enough awareness to recognize the signs of an attack coming on (a success in and of itself!) and I attempted to intervene by using gratitude. Music was not really what turned my life around. In my state it was hard to see what to be grateful for, but I had learned enough to know that being observant and curious in the moment is what cultivates presence, so I focused on my surroundings. The smell of saltwater in the air. The way my body was covered in dappled light. I looked up to see the sun playing peek-a-boo between the swaying leaves of a palm tree. It reminded me of being a small girl in Alaska, lying beneath birch trees and watching that same sun dance between the leaves. Suddenly a heavy wave of gratitude swept across my entire body. My very existence was an act of beautiful defiance. I was here! Was fighting for my happiness! I had not given up! The next thing I knew, a half hour had passed—no panic attack. My life’s work has not been about music; it has been about solving for pain. Music was a big part of that healing for me. Music is that magical medicine that soothes and opens us all. But music was not really what turned my life around. Here is something a lot of mental health advocates may not tell you: Meditation alone will not change your life. You have to find a way to put that conscious presence to work. You have to find practicable things to do if you really want to rewire your negative habits or make better decisions for your happiness. Putting mindfulness in motion is what my life has really been about. The pandemic has laid bare just how bad our mental health crisis is. When we are isolated and can’t connect, we suffer greatly. Google searches for panic attacks were up 100% in March of 2020 compared to the previous year; one-quarter of young adults contemplated suicide during the pandemic, according to a study conducted in August of 2020. But we were already facing a mental health crisis prior to COVID. Suicide rates between 2000 and 2016 went up 30%. We have been living in a connected world thanks to the internet, but it has caused an epidemic of disconnection and suffering. So what do we do about it? Teach simple emotional and mental hygiene strategies the same way we teach career strategies or simple self-care. We learn how to take care of our teeth and how to floss—why don’t we learn how to take care of our thoughts and feelings? It is our thoughts and feelings, after all, that dictate our actions. Take a look at our collective actions, and you’ll see that our thoughts and feelings are in crisis. We may have stopped seeing the connection between emotional health and physical wellbeing, but our bodies haven’t. Chronic stress-related illnesses range from obesity to heart disease to Alzheimer’s to asthma. It behooves us (yes, I use that word for my grandmother) to get serious about our mental health crisis, from a humanitarian standpoint and a business one. We need a new metric for progress, one that takes mental health and happiness into our GNP. Depression and anxiety have a significant economic impact; the estimated cost to the global economy is $1 trillion per year in lost productivity.Finding ways to be consciously present is more important than ever to our quality of life, and it may be the most radical form of activism yet. Better certainly than the decidedly anti-heart movement of cancel culture. Shame and isolation are not the tools of reform and rehabilitation.I don’t propose we eradicate social media devices. I’m pretty sure they’re here to stay, and I quite enjoy my accounts. Nor do I propose we all hold hands and sing “Kumbaya.” I am not one for empty affirmations or blind optimism. But I do like the idea that we are being called to find ways to bring a sense of connection and community back into urban and industrial settings, that we are being called to go inward, to fight for our happiness.Cultivate presence. Use that presence to identify painful patterns. Move toward the pain by getting curious and observant. Create a strategy to stop doing things that contract you, and start doing things that bring you peace. And commit an act of beautiful defiance: Breathe. To access a free online mental health fitness and training resource visit JewelNeverBroken.com.
