Then they introduced tipping by card but we all soon realised not to even give the customer that option as we never saw a penny of it. We kept asking and were told it would be divided among us and it never was. To be fair I get TipJar card tips (same as in the picture), at the restaurant I work in and they are all distributed fairly based on hours worked. Eh… Staff are already paid a fair wage. Tipping is to acknowledge & appreciate a good service / experience / etc. This isn’t the US. Correction some are but the minimum wage is not a living wage, while not the US we still have wages that are too low in this country which means we the taxpayers have to subsidise employers through “in work benefits” rather than getting them to pay fair wages in the first place, of course prices would have to go up but it should be a one off correction. Of course for “reasons” we are currently seeing higher wages in service industries but I’m not sure it will last. Tipping for me though is about service in the UK not subsiding employers even more than we do already as long as it goes to the employee I’m happy with card I usually ask.

No desire to get into a debate about wages but I otherwise agree with your point on tipping, which is exactly what I was getting at – We don’t tip to subsidise wages as previous commenter implied, we tip to say ‘thank you’. We’re not American! I’ve worked retail but not in the food industry. I’m pretty sure minimum wage applies regardless, so we really needn’t pay a tip as the customer unless we want to. I rarely do. If anything, I’d want to tip the chef and I have done so in the past. I do think it’s ridiculous, especially since I don’t tip a shelf stacker so why should I tip a server? Exactly. Me ex worked selling shoes for minimum wage and no one ever tipped her regardless of how helpful she was. My girlfriend now works at lush for minimum wage and can never be tipped. I would still tip a service worker for exceptional service but always in cash and tell them to pocket it themselves and they always do. Last time I went to America (2019) every fucker wanted a tip and weren’t shy about telling you. The hop-on hop-off tour bus (where you pay a premium so you DON’T pay to get on or off) had tour guides telling you at every single stop “remember, you tip in this country – both me and the driver!”
