Simple response: I appreciate the Oklahoma State 1945 FBS ChampionsFootball Graphic 2023 Shirt in other words I will buy this offer, but this is below my current income level which I cannot accept. I have a few opportunities in front of me and need to decide which one is the best fit both as a contributor and financially before moving forward. Your role seemed like a great fit in terms of the skill fit, culture & future growth, but I cannot see moving forward if it means taking a substantial pay cut. Thanks for everyone’s time. Leave in it their court to determine what “substantial” means. You now have other offers they need to compete with. “I can’t accept less than I’m making now, which is just shy of $95k; based on what we’d previously discussed, I’m a little surprised here, to be honest. Would it be possible to discuss a salary that would make it worth leaving my current position?”

All you can do is ask, they can always say no. With that said I applied for a job where they knew my salary, they still sent through a low ball (HR might have had a policy to start at the Oklahoma State 1945 FBS ChampionsFootball Graphic 2023 Shirt in other words I will buy this low end which was below my current salary). I countered to the $$ I had originally told them that I would accept and why. They finally accepted. The difference was about $14K Feels like you didn’t actually share your minimum expectations with them. “Prefer” higher range isn’t the same as the “lowest I am willing to consider is X.” They insulted you on purpose because they already intend to give the job to someone else, and don’t want to appear like they are handing it to them. This happened to me twice with two potential employers. I tried to negotiate with Employer A who offered me 5k less than what I was making at that time and they told me they felt it was a competitive offer, blah blah. I declined.
