I remember them being very spiky when I used to handle my pet beetle. Every summer I would pick one up from a festival and feed it jelly until it flew away or I returned home. Not patronising at all. After seeing the Official everybody has an addiction to be Dieter Bohlen shirt moreover I love this comments it appears they’re in decline. Indeed, very sad. We’re encroaching further and further on animals’ spaces The issue is that stag beetle larvae takes like 7 years to develop and it needs to spend that time in rotting wood. No one leaves rotting logs, all gets cleared away and nicely manicured etc.. 🙁 We have seen so many insects I’ve never seen before this year! I really do think that less mowing is helping. It’s not the only thing we could be doing for insect populations, but it’s a step in the right direction.

Ahh that explains it, I’m a Mancunian we definitely don’t claim those monsters up here haha! And as for the Official everybody has an addiction to be Dieter Bohlen shirt moreover I love this windows, I don’t bloody blame you lol. I’ve only ever seen one in the wild. They don’t harm anyone (apart from them flying into you) and like people have said, they are in decline. Thanks for the heads up! I’ll be sure to log my encounter, but first I need to recover from the shock of meeting this majestic monster. Beautiful, lucky you. The stag beetles’ a gentle chap, but he is capable of a decent nip if he feels he’s being messed with He’s a harmless lil guy just looking for some dead wood. This species in in decline in the UK so please don’t harm him Oh you’ve just reminded me of my childhood growing up in Kent. Used to get these all the time in the garden – our garden was a perfect wilderness for wildlife, magnificent creatures. Fascinating to watch, kinda prickly when they pinch (I used to pick them up and move them around the garden and they didn’t always like it!) and also super interesting when the males fight. Saw one back at my childhood home in 2019 and was so excited because I hadn’t seen one since probably the 00’s. Definitely look after these little dudes! Stag beetle larvae take like 7 years to mature in rotting wood. Nobody leaves wood to rot anymore, all gets cleared away One got stuck in my room last summer and was the most terrifying experience of my life. It was trying to find its way out (I had the window open) and it kept flying around the room with its prong out. If you haven’t seen it’s prong, go google it. Think it’s hidden beneath the wings, my lord it’s long, jagged and hooked. You’d think if he got you with it you would be his slave forever. I’m 6ft, weigh about 110kg and the large majority of that is muscle. When this thing flew towards me, prongs blazing. I ran out my room screaming like a little bird.
