That’s only going to work on kids who are afraid of physical punishment. There’s a whole lot that aren’t. The trouble is, detention just tends to be sitting there at lunch or after school for an hour. Whoop dee doo. Some kids do hate sitting there with nothing to do, but others just see it as time to piss around. It’s not like the adults who had to sit there for an hour cared for the whole thing either. Detention is weak. Even writing lines is weak because you can sort of cheese them. That said, the worst detention I ever had was having to write out several pages from an extremely boring book. You can’t cheese it. You can’t just go down the lines with each letter until you’re done. You can’t just do it in big letters either. No talking amongst yourselves. You had to do it properly or you’d have to do it again. And again. And again. Detention after detention until you do it properly. That was truly maddening to the point where you desperately wanted to do it properly so you didn’t have to anymore. It was very effective, thinking back on it. But most detentions weren’t like that. The mass majority were just sitting there, talking amongst ourselves or staring at phones. Did nothing good for anyone.
