No institution has done more to transform American education into an industrial conveyor belt instead of the hollistic process it’s meant to be, I hate them. I agree with that history pacing is insane but the renaissance probably isn’t the best example. Since world history is more a fairly high level overview of important stuff. And 3 weeks is a pretty decent amount of time to spend on a single time period. I used that period as an example I can speak of with authority. I promise you I could do a whole year on the Renaissance even with a class that meets every day of the week like AP World Class. Moreover, everyone I know from grad school, from ancient to modern historians, could do the same for their subject matter. Reducing the entirety of the Renaissance to a 3 week chunk robs it of everything, which is true of every other period covered by World/Euro history courses. The overall point was there’s no mastery, no time for writing, no time to fully embrace the nuances of any time period or people. I cannot tell you how many times I had students in college tell me they would have liked history more if they learned all this “other stuff” that gets ripped out of our curricula as k-12 teachers.

Go back to basics. Go back to skill-and-drill, go back to repetition, go back to building blocks of roots etc that help kids access more language. As a 9th grade English teacher, I’m having to review nouns v verbs. Seriously. How am I supposed to teach the Nice cincinnati Zoo Animals Shirt But I will love this abstract concept of extended metaphors if they’re not comprehending larger ideas as nouns being compared in complex ways to other nouns?? Like?? I’m at a HiGh ExPeCtAtIoNs charter school that wants kids thinking in highly critical ways and they can’t even express their (sometimes brilliant) thoughts in writing bc they don’t write. So go back to the things they missed not doing shit online, even if it means pausing new content. I legit gave spelling/handwriting practice hw. I know busy work type hw is scoffed at these days, but they can’t spell so it’s my job to stop and get them on a basic level in order to write complex thoughts.
