The title looks like it was written by an admin who wants to blame teachers, and/or place the solution of wide societal issues on teachers. I’m sorry if it came across that way. “We” was meant to represent “We as a society”, and not “You as teachers”. As someone who has been working in secondary for a few years, it really has to be a whole community effort. The class sizes, lack of SpEd and language support, and pushing us to fundamentally change our teaching to new trends (right now, Kagan is all the rage), is preventing teachers from creating a realistic and stable curriculum to build off of in ways that will help more individual students. The trust between the community and teachers also needs to be rebuilt, especially in red states (like mine), where any teacher that challenges these more corporate ideologies is accused of horrendous ideals. One of my colleagues wore her teaching badge to vote for a bill that would help provide more staff for our students who need dramatically more support, and was accused of being a p×do by someone else in the voting line. We are schools, not businesses. We cannot be run like businesses.

Teachers need to stop worrying about these inadequate admin, kids with chronic behavior issues, work overload. Only work your contracted hours. Education has become toxic with parents failing their children and teaching their kids to undermine authority and all these inadequate admin just want to please them so they don’t ruffle feathers or are scared to say no to anything. Kids aren’t up to their grade level academically, teachers need to stop worrying that they aren’t. It’ll either break the system and chaos will start when it’s their time to be adults or it’ll reset itself. Every year some administrator thinks they have the solution for more student engagement, yet they always fall short because they too do not have the capacity to keep up whatever program they “designed.” Btw, I’m in education, not on the teaching side, but on the info systems side. The toxic environment does not only permeate the classroom. It is the same on the board level. Employees always complaining, yet they still stay?
