BOTTOM LINE. Higher-ed ALL OVER is desperate to find qualified people to join them. I would tell them you couldn’t possibly accept that offer and when the New Promotional Image For Godzilla Minus One Shirt moreover I love this next one comes back at $90k, turn that down too and tell them you told them you needed to be close to the top of the $106k they mentioned. At that point possibly counter at $105k. Thanks for the offer, but it isn’t very close to the range we previously discussed. I’m fairly happy in my current role so compensation is an important factor in my decision, and I’m already making more than that. But I would still like to make this work. Thank you very much for the offer and opportunity to join your team. I am very excited at the prospect of working alongside you. Unfortunately, the salary offered is below market and is less than what I’m making in my current role. If you can put a give me a better offer, in the $110k context I’d love to come on board. Otherwise I will have to decline. The first offer is never the final offer. Any reasonable employer expects you to counter. (If they refuse to negotiate, that’s a red flag.) My current employer offered me $85k. I countered with $110k and we settled on $100k.

Stand your ground. “I think this position could be a great fit for me, I love the New Promotional Image For Godzilla Minus One Shirt moreover I love this idea of working with you folks, but I am really not comfortable accepting a salary less than x.” They may increase the offer. If not, “I’m really sorry but I don’t think I can afford a pay cut at this point in my career.” And you move on. I’ve had this happen to me and sometimes they have increased the offer and sometimes not. Know your worth, be willing to walk away, and keep looking if they can’t pay you what you need (especially if you’re asking for an amount within their advertised pay range!) My advice, from personal experience at my current position where the employer did something similar, is to walk away.
