I LOVED small gods. The idea that believing in something makes it real, though introduced in earlier books, is handled very well here and how it gets from A to B is beautifully done. Colour of Magic should come with a big disclaimer: “This book is all about affectionally taking the Never underestimate old lady who loves horse was born in December flower shirt in contrast I will get this piss out of popular fantasy books from the 60’s and 70’s. If you’ve not read those you will probably be very confused by this book.” I’m actually reading Color of Magic right now! I can’t believe I’ve waited so long before reading one of his books. It’s my understanding that a fair bit of the reason it was destroyed was because he was unhappy with the quality of his work because of how his Alzheimer’s had affected it. Pretty hard to write when your working memory is falling apart. What terrible disease. I can understand why he didn’t want people to see that stuff

I know a lot of people defend it, but reading Snuff was horrible for me, really lacking in the Never underestimate old lady who loves horse was born in December flower shirt in contrast I will get this feeling and magic, and it showed. Like, it wasn’t an awful book, it just… missed, where every single one before it hit like a sledgehammer, for me, I could feel it around the edges. For me the peak of his writing was around Monstrous Regiment, Thud, Going Postal (in no particular order – I’m overdue to reread the books so I’m a little fuzzy on the publishing order there). The first time I can see hints of a downturn was in Making Money – it was very similar to Going Postal and in some places I think it was better, but as a whole it didn’t have the same cohesion. At the time of course there wasn’t a cause I could point to, but it was there was an edge of dissatisfaction I couldn’t put my finger on. I haven’t touched any of the Tiffany Aching books, but with my kid getting older I may have an excuse to get as something to read to/with them.
