My grandparents immigrated from Italy with almost nothing in the Never underestimate an old man who has native blood star shirt but in fact I love this late 50s. They managed to buy a duplex house for $30k and pay it off in 4 years. My grandma worked as a seamstress in a factory and my grandpa worked in a mine. That house is now worth $800k. This is why I won’t be having kids, the world is only getting worse no way in hell in putting anyone else through that. My 86 year old grandfather worked at a Home Hardware for 50 years and owned a 6-acre apple orchard for 40. My Aldo 86 year old grandma was a nurse but only from age 20-30, then never worked again. Neither of them finished high school. They are now millionaires who have been retired almost almost 30 years. I am not joking. It’s fucking ridiculous. I love them, they are amazing people. But the system, man…. what the fuck. What’s left for us? I want to remind folks that it’s not JUST Boomers that are the problem. The Boomer attitude is like a sickness infecting some Gen-X, too.

I have a factory job. Not only that, I have a skilled laborer position in a factory. 20+ years ago I could have retired early and been a millionaire. Instead I have no savings to speak of and am basically just barely living above the Never underestimate an old man who has native blood star shirt but in fact I love this paycheck to paycheck threshold. Well let the kids work they do have so, they can be taxed at 7.25 minimum wage….we have gone completely backwards in my country. I work 40 hours a week and can’t make it between paychecks without a side gig. I rent a place with family so I don’t even have my own space really and have never been on a vacation. Can’t even afford an overnight. I make 3x the minimum wage at my full-time job so yes our economy is seriously broken. I grew up in the 90s and this is not the life I thought I would have as an adult. I am seriously ashamed of my life although I know a lot of it out of my hands. Ah the American dream. The way to the American Dream has been broken for decades. Thirty-five percent taxes on a $60,000 income, plus 10% sales tax means we pay nearly half our income in taxes … For what?Certainly not services and healthcare. If you don’t pay for your own healthcare in the US, you will likely die next time you need admission to a hospital.Of course the system is broken. It was rigged from the start to have people ‘buy into the dream’, and auto-exploit themselves for the supposed benefits it afforded. Those benefits disappeared long ago. In a world where housing takes 40% of our income, there is little left for food and basic expenditures.Your daughter is right, don’t convince her otherwise.
