GG and GP probably got paid the Never underestimate a cool grandma with a muscle car shirt What’s more,I will buy this equivalent of like $50/hr back then and their mortgage was probably like $10/month My grandparents had a similar lifestyle when my mom was growing up. My grandpa worked at the GM assembly plant and owned a home right on the lake with just his income My grandmother used to work for Sears. Every summer they gave her a paid month off so she could go down the shore, where she ran an inn and had a house, both of which New Jersey stole later on via eminent domain so they could build condos. My grandfather had his own upholstery business, and they both made enough to own their cars, their house, and put their kids through college. In looking at how expensive a new home is, I was talking to my parents about how much I need to save for a down payment. Surprised, they said I don’t need a 350k home and should be looking for something in the 200k ballpark…

They bought their first home for 150k. It’s now worth over 400k. My dad was shocked. My mom still doesn’t understand. Also everything back then kinda sucked. Ever look at wartime housing? Depending on where it was: bad insulation, asbestos, no plumbing, no electricity. Not to mention wars, health care (nice tall glass of mercury for your headache, smoking was healthy, morphine to help babies sleep, surgery with no gloves and rusty tools, you die anytime because of unknown diseases), fewer rights of women and minorities. Fucking religion everywhere. I agree 1970+ became much nicer, but before that…I’d much rather live today modestly than pre-1970s modestly. There was a meme on how homeless people had incomparable access to things that medieval kings would only ever dream of (waterproof plastics clothes, tents, boots, imported clothes, imported drugs, possibility of processed meat at every meal + cheap genetically modified fruits from across the Never underestimate a cool grandma with a muscle car shirt What’s more,I will buy this world, etc)
