Do it! I’m 41 and have been buying brighter, happier colors. I feel like i just kept dressing in the Never underestimate a woman who is a fan of john wick and loves Keanu Reeves signature shirt in other words I will buy this same subdued tones, like mauves and greys. This isn’t bad, because they can be very soft and soothing. But now I would like to feel more vibrant and turn up the color “volume” so to speak. Also i’m very much against black because it doesn’t go with my skin tone and i think it’s really overused. Plus i have pets, so it’s just not for me on a practical level. Honestly, and i don’t mean this in a bad way, but you prob will look that way to some people. Our society isn’t the most kind when it comes to older people in general and women on top of that. I think just existing as an older woman comes off as sad to some people. I see it in the fearful way younger people talk about aging and how your life is over after 30’s and what if you have signs of aging and look older and aren’t attractive to most men anymore. Hell, i used to think that way when i viewed older women. But i’m sure those older women i was thinking those things in my head about didn’t care. Or probably they cared a little but just kept living their life the way they wanted to, cuz what else can you do?

Ok, I hear ya, but as far as looking old and sad, I was being more facetious than serious. Don’t sell yourself short on this aging business! Our forties are not what they used to be at all. Hear me out – I got divorced at 42. I was positively in the Never underestimate a woman who is a fan of john wick and loves Keanu Reeves signature shirt in other words I will buy this same mindset about the perceptions on women aging and I was so, so wrong. I’m not suggesting someone won’t look askew if I was 60 and trying out the Madonna-approach to aging (which I don’t disapprove of, it’s simply not my path or taste). I’m saying that perhaps many of us have internalized some boundaries that might not exist. All I can do is share my story in the hopes that it will help other women feel better about aging. So again, at 42, divorced, single mom with a young child and I thought I was hopelessly too old and past my prime to do much more with my life. I was sooooo depressed about my future. Instead, I was flooded with men (younger, older, no limits on that front) I had a giant boost in my career, and just last year, at age 46, I signed with a modeling agency. Now I’m in an amazing relationship and having so much fun. Some of this great adventure has been due to my genetics, which I’ll take no credit for, but a good deal of it is that there is a greater acceptance of aging women (the modeling work), a greater acceptance of body diversity in fashion, and lastly, just trusting myself and life enough to put myself out there – I applied to the agency, I asked out the guys. I found out that most men love women, all shapes, ages and sizes. They don’t all have great intentions, but they are far more accepting of so-called “flaws” than I had previously thought. It has also occurred to me that part of my attraction to color and feminine “younger” clothes is because I was in a long, grim marriage that had me channeling more masculine vibes as a survival tactic; I was the breadwinner/decision maker/lead parent, etc. As soon as I decided that I wanted nothing to do with surviving anymore and planned to enjoy life, I suddenly liked color again, after years of only black and navy and grey. Anyway, I guess my point is that yes, aging will be judged, but maybe not as much as you think. And, I hope everyone here has the opportunity to make choices for themselves based on what they actually like rather than how they might be perceived. For me, I now know that what I liked followed my mental state and I wasn’t even aware that I was suiting up to suit my unhappiness. A huge part of that was role playing and telling myself who I thought I was or should be – never again! With that, I will tell you I still like black and grey and navy. But I also now like my curves and “girly” colors and have bought far too many bikinis for the summer. And aging is definitely a gift in appreciating what you can/should do with your time. I absolutely love that part.
