If you give them a breakdown, so they can see you’re not ‘ripping them off’ and not earning anything from them, it’s purely paying for their useage- then it’ll not be so much a shock when they get to the NEDFIRE CLUB Shirt and I will buy this point of fleeing the nest. If you want to be cheeky- ask for an extra £100 to put into a savings for them (obviously it all goes in the same pot, and they’ll get that down the line). I was charged a £100 a month whilst living at home plus expected to buy shopping occasionally, takeaways etc more than would be my share. Admittedly this was in total far below what I could have been charged but my parents wanted to me to save money and in their view it didn’t make sense for them to be making a profit off of me. I’m grateful that they did as it allowed me to build up a decent level of savings which meant that I could buy when I moved out rather than renting.

In the NEDFIRE CLUB Shirt and I will buy this end its up to you what you charge them, maybe charge at a level that is equal to your costs but having that expectation that they will save money not spend every last free penny. If they don’t appear to be saving then maybe upping the rent but secretly saving that portion? My eldest pays towards the bills, but not rent as we no longer have a mortgage they pay £280 a month but don’t have a well paying job We charge #1 daughter £30 a week which covers everything apart from clothes and stuff above and beyond what comes into the house from the supermarket , her dad also gives her £25 a month back as bus money, plus he pays half her phone bill so overall she’s not doing too bad , she works part time . When #1 son was still at home we charged him £60 because he was working full time and earning more than his dad and I was still buying him clothes and extras. It was still a bad case of sticker shock when he moved out (we furnished his first flat for him) and he had to pay for everything My dad charged my siblings a rent on par with a local roomshare with a portion of the utility bills etc. I didn’t stay back home after I moved out, so I don’t have an exact figure, but I think it was around £500 all in. But he then gave them a chunk back towards move in costs/house deposit when they moved out because it was the principle not the money he wanted to give them experience of. Do what works for you, maybe just a straight percentage of the house bills+mortgage rounded down if you’re feeling kind
