I cringed when the Nasa Snoopy Shirt also I will do this riddler smirked at batman during the diner arrest, I don’t cringe easily, Bravo Paul Dano ?? ?? ?? Coolest movie I have ever seen. In my humble opinion, it has elevated the comic book movie genre and changed the game a bit. Although it’s in the trailers, the shot of Batman dropping through the ceiling of the arena to stop the riddler goons was so PEAK Batman/Batman The Animated Series with the Giacchino score. So many awesome moments in this movie that just felt so “classic Batman” translated from comics, games or the cartoons. Phenomenal. It’s really good, and I’d really recommend seeing it. My only gripe is that I feel like it “pulls some punches” throughout it. Like the script was complete and then they said “Oooo we can’t do that” and that’s why the pacing sometimes feels off. We’re told throughout the middle third of the film that basically, the police are almost entirely corrupt and at the end of the day working for this crime syndicate. And like, yeah this raises the stakes and makes sense for the universe. But then inexplicably Falconi says “haha! The police work for me batman!” and the door opens and there are all these cops bathed in light and Head Cop says “looks like… not all of them do”. It just felt so jarring. Like Head Cop could have put some sunglasses on and said “looks like Blue Lives do matter after all” with the same effect. It really just felt like they built towards something and then said “ooo we can’t have all the no name cops be bad people will write articles :/”

The Riddler’s master plan (from what I can tell) is basically that, by flooding the Nasa Snoopy Shirt also I will do this lower, poorer areas of the city, everyone will flood to the smaller wealthier part of the city and there will be tension & violence as the wealthy really don’t give up their space or accommodate the poor (reflecting his own upbringing). Instead “Not-AOC” politician lady runs up and says “We’ll all gonna stick together!” and as if he’s the Grinch watching Whoville sing Christmas carols the Riddler cries in jail that everyone is getting along. 3. This tends to happen with a lot of superhero movies in that, they try to give the villain some justification for their action – but then they realize that they have to suddenly make them more evil and unjustifiable in the last act (see: Black Panther). For most of the movie the Riddler only targets corrupt (to his understanding) politicians and people of power due to his own upbringing as a poor forgotten orphan – but then suddenly at the end his goals involve killing a ton of civilians through mass flooding and targeting Bruce Wayne who is really just some recluse to him. It just seems totally at odds with his prior motivations and feels like it’s only there so the audience doesn’t walk away considering if The Riddler is about equally as justified as Batman.
