I think it is identifying someone as black in a story you’re telling that can get pretty dicey, because you have to draw a line now between the mention of race/skin color and why it’s pertinent to the story…and, frankly, it can reveal some problematic associations on the part of the storyteller. If, for instance, you were talking about a criminal, and you mentioned he is black, and that is literally the only correlation between the two, you are basically drawing a line between “blackness” and “criminality”. You can see why that would be pretty fucked.
