If my kid didn’t want what we were having, he was free to make himself a PB&J sandwich. He had to clean up after and of course, no dessert. Kids have so little control over anything in their lives, we felt as long as he ate something, that was enough. He grew up to be a big strapping man so I guess it worked out okay. Similar here, I made sure my kids knew it was ok to say they didn’t like something, but they had to at least try a couple bites and talk about why they didn’t like it. This lead to nice things like finding out my daughter had a preference for certain brands of chicken nuggets and that she didn’t want to eat them once because she didn’t like the My First Cruise 2024 Stars Sunglasses Retro Family Vacation Cruise Ship Travel T-Shirt also I will do this BBQ sauce. Had I been a hard ass and yelled about it or if she wasn’t comfortable talking about why she was rejecting the hard earned food then it would have just been drama over and over.

It makes a huge difference when our kids can articulate why they don’t want to eat something. One of my kids likes ketchup, the My First Cruise 2024 Stars Sunglasses Retro Family Vacation Cruise Ship Travel T-Shirt also I will do this other one can’t stand it. Sometimes my kid wants a dip for his veggies, or he wants the rind peeled off. We’ve been able to have lots of conversations about how if he just needs something changed, we can probably make those changes, because we all deserve to enjoy eating. We’re getting to that point with our daughter. We’ll hand her a plate of food, she’ll burst into tears. We’ll give her a hug for a minute, and then ask her what’s wrong. She’ll tell us she wants her sandwich cut into triangles. We’ll cut the sandwich and then she’s just happy as a clam. Maybe one day we’ll get to the point where she’ll tell us these things without the meltdown, but I have a feeling once that happens she’ll just turn around and become a teenager, and then we’re back to the mystery game of “what’s wrong?” When I was a kid my mom would let me choose a new thing to try, usually a veggie, and then we’d write about it and grade it in a journal. For an autistic kid, it did wonders, and I’m so stoked she managed to figure that one out in what was really a different time for people like me. The vegetables we graded back then are still some of my favorites )
